Mine Dogs Details:
Since the mid 80´s The Swedish Armed Forces have had explosive detector dogs in international duty in following countries: Lebanon, Kuwait, Bosnia, Cambodia, Western Sahara. Explosive detector dogs are not an ordinary part of The Swedish Armed Forces. This means that for any new international assignment orders are given by the Headquarters and the center starts to train the dogs. The dogs are then trained specifically for the kind of task they are supposed to perform. A good example of this is how the dogs are trained for the task in Bosnia. The main task for the dogs in Bosnia is to rescue personel from accidents that happen in minefields. In this case using a dog is the fastest way to reach out to the injured man.
The Swedish Armed Forces together with Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency/Sida run a humanitarian project in Cambodia. The project means that the Swedish Armed Forces give ´Know how` to the government demining organization Cambodia Mine Action Centre/CMAC. The mine detection dog teams/MDD in the CMAC organization is used to confirm if the searched area is mined or not. Using the MDD in this way you can use the other demining parts in CMAC in a more effective way and keep the costs down.
The Swedish Armed Forces have provided CMAC with instructors and trainers, Swedish mine detection dogs and Cambodian mine detection dogs. The Swedish Armed Forces Dog Instruction Centre have trained the Cambodian dogs in Sweden and then they have been transported back to Cambodia. The Cambodian dogs are more resistant to some local diseases compared to European dogs. In training and work the Cambodian mine detection dogs are performing very well.
